Ira Lee Berlet
History Instructor
Memorial High School
Houston, TX

I completed my undergraduate work at
Texas A&M University in College Station
graduating with a BA in History and a
minor in Political Science.  Also, I obtained
a Social Studies Composite Texas Teaching
Certificate at Texas A&M. In 2005 I
finished an MA in American History at
Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
My thesis was on the subject of 19th
century Boston intellectuals and their
paradoxical views on freedom, race, and
anti-slavery activism. Presently I am a
Ph.D. candidate in History at the University
of Houston.

Before coming to Memorial HS I most
recently worked as a graduate teaching
assistant at the University of Houston.
During the 2006-2007 school year I
worked as a History Instructor at Blinn
College in Bryan, Texas.  While at Blinn I
taught US History from Discovery through
Reconstruction.  Prior to Blinn I taught at
Vista Ridge High School in Cedar Park,
Texas.  At VRHS I served as the Social
Studies Department Chair and taught AP
US History.

For most of 2004 and 2005 I worked as
the Assistant Director of Social Studies
with the Texas Education Agency.  Prior to
working with TEA I taught for five years
at Highland Park High School in Dallas; a
year at R.L. Turner High School in
Carrollton, Texas; and for two years at
James E. Taylor High School in Katy,
Texas.

For over eight years I have been a faculty
consultant, "reader" for the College Board
reading AP exams in both US History and
US Government. Additionally, in 2002 I
began consulting for the College Board
training teachers about AP US History at
one and two day conferences.

I have taught HIST 1301 at the college
level and at the secondary level AP US
History, AP Government and Politics,
World History, World Geography,
Sociology, US Government, Law Studies,
and Economics.
